January 2001
I am now at my highest weight ever and have for the first time
broken the 300 lbs. barrier. At 5'7 ½", I currently weigh
in at 306 lbs. and I am very unhappy.
My hair has gotten very thin, my skin looks terrible, and I'm having
major knee problems where I'm now walking with a limp. In addition,
I have high protein levels in my urine, one of the first signs of
impending diabetes.
I have begun an intense research period into WLS (weight loss surgery).
In the meantime, I have made the decision to proceed as if I am
going to have the surgery. That way if I do, I will already be in
a state of mind where I know I have to be more careful of what I
eat, and the transition will not be such a drastic one.
Therefore I have decided to do Nutri-System for the third time.
I know Nutri-System is just a short-term solution, but I want to
get some of this weight off right now.
I have found many informative resources on WLS and especially the
Gastric Bypass procedure. I am becoming informed on how the surgery
works, what the risks are, what the benefits are, and what you must
do afterwards to work with the surgery to be on your way to better
health.
I have focused on New England Medical Center (NEMC) and Dr. Scott
Shikora, although Dr. Bruce Thayer of Newton-Wellesley also seems
to be an excellent choice. I have been speaking with many who have
had surgery with Dr. Shikora, and I have solicited comments from
patients of Dr. Thayer also.
I visited Dr.
Shikora's website and called their office and left my name and
number. I cannot make an appointment with them until they return
my call. I am excited, but the downside is that I hear there is
a 4 month wait for an appointment and an 8-12 month wait for surgery.
I do not know yet if surgery will be an option for me, but I do
know this: I do not want to live the rest of my life like I am right
now.
