November 2001
Time sure does fly. Here it is already 3 months from my surgery!
I am for the first time ever really learning how to eat properly.
I go out a lot with friends to restaurants and always get baked
or grilled items, go easy on the carbs, and make sure to eat the
protein part of the meal first.
I eat healthful snacks during the day like roasted soybeans or
peach-applesauce (unsweetened). I've learned to like protein bars
and can usually make one stretch out all day. Carb Solutions makes
a pretty good chocolate-toffee protein bar with only 2 grams of
sugar.
I am able to eat more now. The first month after surgery I could
eat only 2-3 ounces at the most at one sitting. I can now eat 4-5
ounces, depending on what it is. So to prevent me from going over
that, I portion out my food ahead of time. In a restaurant, I will
immediately cut the meal into thirds. At home, I will immediately
pack up what I know I won't eat and put it in the fridge.
Sometimes I slightly dump if I've eaten too fast, if I drank too
soon afterwards, or if there was a bit too much sugar in something
I ate (I try to keep the sugar below 10 grams). My heart beats slightly
faster for about 10 minutes, but I never go into a full dump which
is good.
I am exercising twice a day (weights at lunch and treadmill at
night -- weekends I just do low-impact aerobics). I think my weight
loss is right on track. This month I lost 14.5 lbs. which is beyond
what I expected. That means that it is possible that I might get
below 200 lbs. by New Year. Yes!!
I had my blood tested today for iron levels and although the results
won't be back for a week Dr. Thayer said to go ahead taking iron
sulfate tablets since I was iron deficient last year long before
the surgery.
But this presents a little problem: a common side effect of this
new way of eating is constipation. This has been an ongoing problem
for the past month for me. I've tried Fibercon wafers, Senacot,
and Milk of Magnesia but nothing keeps me regular. I drink a natural
Chinese herbal tea when it gets bad and that works as the best laxative
I have ever had, but the point is to try to get regular which is
not happening.
Now I have to add the iron therapy and iron causes even more constipation.
I will have to figure out what is going to work for me on a daily
basis to get me regular. As the saying goes, "you gotta be
regular if you want to be happy." <g>
