October 2001
Well here it is already 2 months out and I feel great! Nothing
at all hurts in my stomach area anymore. I can sneeze, cough, roll
over, sleep on my side or stomach, plant in the garden, and exercise
and it doesn't even feel like I had major surgery.
I did learn a lesson this month about plateaus. I had 3 weeks where
the scale didn't really move, and I was getting totally depressed
over it. I had prepared myself for plateaus but I didn't expect
one to start only 6 weeks after surgery. I had read of too many
people who lost 20+ in their second month and here I was more than
halfway through the month at only a 5 pound loss.
But the last week of this month everything went *whoosh*. Suddenly
the loss jumped up to 12.5 lbs. So I learned two valuable things:
1) don't fret about plateaus no matter when they happen. It doesn't
do any good and it will start coming off again! and 2) get
the scale out of the house.
Without the scale, I can't fret about 3 weeks with no loss. I'll
find out my loss at the end of the month when I go over my neighbors
to weigh myself. So if I had a short plateau, I won't know it. :)
Earlier this month I took a trip up to the mountains and did a
lot of climbing and walking. It was great to be able to walk up
hilly areas and not get winded. It felt super! And I'm starting
to feel a lot better about having my picture taken.
I also spoke at the beginning of this month at the Newton-Wellesley
Hospital's Obesity Support meeting. For some wacky reason I enjoy
public speaking and I had a lot of fun!
So anyway, I'm not really disappointed with only a 12.5 lbs. loss
this month because I lost inches. I've been back on my regular exercise
routine: Richard Simmons Tone 'n Sweat / Tonin' Uptown / Tonin'
Downtown weight training during my lunch hour, and then walking
2 miles either outside or on the treadmill every night, skipping
only the nights I feel extremely tired. (I may be getting tired
from low iron levels. Next month's checkup will tell the tale.)
I have to say at this point I really love how my clothes feel on
me. Gone are the red lines at the end of the day from a too-tight
waistline on my pants. Gone are the sweaters stretched to the max.
And lo and behold I can cross my legs fairly easily now! Hey, it's
these little things that make a big difference.
The only thing I don't like too much is that my scar has stretched
and turned dark red (see pictures
if you don't get queasy looking at scars). It sure looked a lot
better right after surgery. The cocoa butter doesn't seemed to have
helped so I've moved on to rubbing vitamin E on it every night.
It's a lot more messy but we'll see if it helps start fading it.
Gosh, with all the staple marks still red I think my scar looks
like the line with slashes all through it that kids draw on Frankenstein's
neck!
